Chocolate…? WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME?
Last night, after a few weeks back home from China, I figured I’d indulge in that most American of combinations at the local greasy spoon: a chocolate shake and a bacon cheeseburger. The shake was quite a bit chocolatier than most, and the mountain of whipped cream was exactly that…none of that hydrogenated oil dairy substitute, thank you. The burger was…ennnh…okay, but the fries made up for it, especially dipped in some heavenly mayonnaise. I may never go back to ketchup again.
Then came bedtime…and tossing and turning for hours. I wasn’t sure exactly what it was. Exposure to screens is, yes, deleterious to effective sleep, but is unfortunately a nightly occurrence. I finally figured out a few minutes ago it was the chocolate that did it. Y’see, that stuff wires me perhaps more than caffeine. Reliably annoying. I realized years ago that did it because whenever I was at a hotel banquet and chocolate cake or brownies were served, I would be up until all hours. Took a few hours for me to figure out why, but now I know.
I thought recently that I was beginning to improve somehow. An occasional piece of chocolate-coated caramel sprinkled with sea salt after dinner wouldn’t affect me noticeably. But last night’s adventure put the kibosh on that theory, unfortunately. Oh well. So much for enjoying chocolate-based ice creams for dessert now. But if I want to enjoy a good night’s sleep and help these muscles grow again, I know what I need to do now. Damn.
